Split-phase home batteries for well pumps and critical circuits

Modular 120/240 V LiFePO4 systems can start deep-well pumps and carry essentials for days without fuel. Pair them with load shedding, check surge against the pump, and budget gross: the 25D credit ended for expenditures after 2025.

Why do I need split-phase 240 V for a well pump?

The step from Tier 1 to Tier 3 is defined by one requirement: true 120/240 V split-phase power. Many consumer power stations output only 120 V. Deep-well submersible pumps, some septic aerators, water heaters and many air handlers need 240 V: two 120 V legs, L1 and L2, 180° out of phase.

120 V vs split-phase
Standard 120 V output:  L1 (120 V) + Neutral               -> lights, fridge, TV
Split-phase 120/240 V:  L1 + L2 (180° apart) = 240 V      -> well pumps, mini-splits

The submersible well pump inrush equation

  • Running load: a typical 3/4 HP 240 V pump draws roughly 1,200–1,500 W.
  • Starting inrush: commonly 3.5×–5× running, so about 4,500–7,500 W for a few hundred milliseconds. Planning estimate
  • Voltage sag risk: if the inverter's surge is too small, voltage sags on start, the pump can hum at locked-rotor current and trip its overload.

Should I use a manual transfer switch or a smart subpanel?

To feed hardwired circuits without backfeeding the grid, Tier 3 uses one of two listed configurations, installed by a licensed electrician:

Distribution options (illustrative costs)
1. Manual 10–12 circuit transfer switch (~$450 hardware + ~$800 install)
   - Fixed critical circuits; flip switches when the grid fails.
   - No automatic load management.
2. Smart subpanel / gateway (~$1,500–$2,000 hardware + ~$1,200 install)
   - 8–21 relay-controlled circuits.
   - Automatic switchover (fast, but not a true online UPS).
   - Rules shed loads by battery state of charge.

Why load shedding protects your battery

Essentials (refrigerator, well pump cycles, LED lighting, router, gas furnace blower) averaging 150–250 W would last roughly 36.72–61.20 hours on 12 kWh. Calculated An unmonitored 4,500 W dryer, water heater or AC would drain the same bank in about 2.04 hours. Calculated

Smart panels such as the EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 2 or Anker's smart subpanel can automate rules like:

  1. Critical (always on): well pump, refrigeration, furnace blower, main lighting.
  2. Comfort (drop at 50%): mini-split, microwave, office circuits.
  3. High-draw (drop at grid loss): electric water heater, secondary HVAC, EV charger.

Can a home battery pay for itself with time-of-use rates?

A generator sits idle most of the year. A battery can cycle daily if your utility has time-of-use pricing:

Illustrative daily cycle (example rates, not your tariff)
01:00–05:00 charge from grid at off-peak rate (e.g., $0.08/kWh)
10:00–14:00 charge from solar ($0.00/kWh marginal)
16:00–21:00 discharge to house instead of buying (e.g., $0.32/kWh)

Shifting 10 kWh a day at a $0.24/kWh spread is $2.40/day, about $876/year, before round-trip losses and battery wear. Calculated Your tariff, export rules and the product's warranty cycling limits determine actual value.

Frequently asked questions

Can a portable power station or home battery run a 240 V well pump?

Only if the system provides 120/240 V split-phase output with enough surge for the pump. A single 120 V station cannot. The EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra lists 120/240 V US output; a BLUETTI AC500 single system is 120 V, and 240 V requires BLUETTI's dual-system setup. Check the pump's starting requirement against the inverter's published surge rating.

What does a smart home panel add to a battery backup system?

It automates switchover from grid to battery and lets you set circuit-level load shedding, so high-draw loads like water heaters and dryers do not drain the battery needed for the refrigerator and well pump. Switchover is fast but is not the same as a true online UPS; check the panel maker's stated transfer time.

Do home battery systems still qualify for the 30% federal tax credit?

Do not assume so for new installations. According to IRS guidance on Public Law 119-21, the Section 25D residential clean energy credit is not allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025, and paying before that date does not qualify an installation completed afterward. Reserve shows gross budgets with no credit deducted.

How long will a 12 kWh battery run a house during a storm?

Using the Reserve formula on AC output, 12 kWh at an average essential draw of 150–250 W lasts roughly 37–61 hours. Heavy loads change that quickly: a continuous 4,500 W load would drain it in about 2 hours.
